Abstract
Dental implant is an essential part of a dental treatment and is becoming more and more widely used by dentists across the globe. The concept of a dental implant and the technological advancement in dental materials and techniques have been developed rapidly in recent years. There is little doubt that the dental implant market trends have become one of the major concerns for both clinicians and practitioners today. During the procedure of implant placement in the posterior maxilla, bone grafting is often required inside maxillary sinus where bone height is limited beneath the sinus floor. Patients with reduced bone volume or severely atrophied posterior maxilla have become a challenge for the doctors who want to place implants. Sinus augmentation is an accepted treatment modality to provide sufficient bone for the placement of dental implants. A number of publications have described techniques for the sinus augmentation procedures. These techniques have been used in different modifications with regard to ways of approach to the sinus, the origin and the form of the grafting materials used. Although predictable, the traditional lateral window sinus lift approach can be of concern, especially in the form of postoperative swelling or pain resulting from extensive surgical trauma which may increase patient¡¯s discomfort. It is considered that piezoelectric device is safe for soft tissue(i.e. sinus membrane) but most piezoelectric inserts did not meet the clinical expectations in a predictable manner. Therefore, I have designed and invented a set of unique piezoelectric inserts that enabled me to approach the sinus floor from the alveolar ridge crest in a safe manner. OSC (Crestally Approached Sinus Elevation using Piezoelectric device) will address and eliminates possible peri-operative complications involved with lateral window and yet deliver same predictable results with decreased patient morbidity.
